The
past year saw the release of MGMT's third album. Their self-titled
psychedelic masterpiece followed major chart success “Oracular
Spectacular” and their trippy follow up “Congratulations”. MGMT
had wanted Congratulations to be available for free, however their
record label intervened.
Unknown
to most though, Andrew VanWyngarden and Benjamin Goldwasser had
already recorded an album together under the name “The Management”.
The album “Climbing To New Lows” was a demo album and wasn't
meant to be released, but somehow was leaked online in 2005. The
album contains a number of songs which could have come straight out
of any 90's video game. This and a sound that is sometimes close to
indistinguishable from Kraftwerk (listen to “Greyhoundredux” led
to a very young, fresh and heavily electronic sounding album. It is
impossible to buy this album – both in digital as in physical form-
as it hasn't officially been released since.
The
VanWyngarden – Goldwasser duo started making music together in 2002
whilst studying experimental music at Wesleyan University in
Connecticut. Goldwasser's original plan had been to move to
California and become a farmer. However he let go of this idea after
MGMT's (The Management changed their name in 2004) “Time To Pretend
EP” and the following tour led to the band's acknowledged
appearance on the musical map of the USA. Recent live performances
have included “Indie Rokkers”, which dates back to this 2005 EP.
MGMT's first version of their biggest hit "Kids" dates back to their 2004 EP "We (Don't) Care". You will find (nearly) all of MGMT's previous work on Youtube. Enjoy finding hidden treasure! Some of it is below - enjoy!
