Mercy Kelly’s "Summer of Silence" is a confident four-track EP that captures the spirit of classic Britpop while embracing the dreamy textures of modern indie rock.
It's comprised of two previous singles titled "Breathe For Her" and "Speak Too Soon", with the former being the opening track, and what an opening track it is. As you may know, we have previously reviewed that track, so we are going to be skipping that today. However, if you want to check out the review, be sure to click here.
... a brilliantly cohesive Britpop-inspired EP packed with soaring melodies, atmosphere, and standout songwriting.
The two new songs on the EP are titled "Love Song" and "Shard of Rain". Moving swiftly onto "Love Song", it is, as it says in the title, a bit of a love song. It kicks off with some jangly guitars that remind me quite a lot of DMA's, and their incredibly regional accent once more showcases their talent for all to see and hear.
The Oldham-based band have been on an absolute high for the last year, and they have been working flat out since 2021, when they made their debut. You can easily hear that here with how cohesive "Love Song" sounds. Be sure to keep an ear out for the final minute, as the song just gets turned up to 11 with some cinematic guitars, soaring moments, and vocals that will have you chanting them back in no time.
The second of the new songs is "Shard of Rain", and that closes out the EP. It opens up with a somewhat dreamy guitar sound that almost reminds me of The Police. It's the type of track that unfolds right before you. With every minute that goes by, it adds more and more atmosphere, more and more layers, getting more and more intricate as it goes on. Vocally, once more, this is absolutely stunning, with this song reminding me almost of The Reytons and The Courteeners. Stunning closure to the EP, and it's going to be one of those tracks that is going to be very hard for them to beat next time around. This could even be a closing song for their live sets for the next 20 years. It's got that much charm and gravitas about it.
Mercy Kelly's new EP, "Summer of Silence", is an out-and-out indie rock belter. An incredibly strong 9.5 out of 10, and I mean that from the heart.
