Album Review... Foals - Holy Fire

At the end of 2012 everyone was loving "Inhaler" and "My Number", come the turn of the year and a live version of "Late Night" was doing the rounds getting everyone excited for their third full length album. The album starts off with an 'intro' song, about time might I say, whenever they play live they tend to play "XXXXX" or "YYYYY", this time round they fully recorded the atmosphere of their live shows and portrayed it accordingly. As you might expect the big hitters in this album were the songs you already know, "Inhaler" and "My Number".

As we go further into the album "Bad Habit" and "Everytime" pop up, these two songs are a huge disappointment for me, "Bad Habit" sounds like it should belong on the previous album and "Everytime" sounds like a song going no-where, this doesn't mean they're bad songs, but just a bit of a come down after hearing some really promising reviews on them both. As they fade into the memory "Late Night" comes on, this song is finally a welcome change to the disappointment as they live version proves that Foals are not just a one trick pony.

The 2nd half of the album is once again a hit and miss fest, songs to take note are "Providence" and "Out of the Woods", the latter which sounds like it was conceived in the Total Life Forever sessions, it's got a very relaxed feel to it and euphoric summertime vibe. With "Milk & Black Spiders" giving us a bit of an uplifting hope we move two tracks ahead onidto the last two songs in this roller-coaster album. The last two are slow songs, "Stepson" is by far my least favourite on the album, however "Moon" reminds me of Antidotes B-Sides and for that reason and the fact that it's a slow song that burns into your memory I'm glad the album ended on this way. Thanks Foals (I guess).

It's tempting to assume that everything Foals do is amazing, this record had turned me from one of those fans to one that thinks that this album is a bit of an under-performance from the qunitet, however it does have it's 'Radio friendly' songs and live favourites, but I just can't help feel that it could've been a bit more than this.
