Sam Airey returns
with his new single 'Station Approach', the first single taken from the sessions
for his forthcoming debut album. Following on from the much-admired single ‘The
Blackout’ and ‘A Marker and a Map’ EP, Sam has developed his
live show and technical ability by playing shows with the likes of ¡Forward,
Russia!, Grammatics and Dancing Years. ‘Station Approach’ brings this talent
and enthusiasm he has cultivated on to record. His label Hide & Seek has
described the new single as such:
“ 'Station Approach' is about capturing the
spirit of youth and holding on to it while you still can. With crashing
guitars, atmospheric drums and an explosive finale, it shows a greater scope
than heard previously on Sam’s records. 'Stars' on the reverse, lays Sam’s
voice bare, enhanced only by the gentle rocking guitar line.”
As well as online, the single is being released on
limited 7” vinyl and is backed by a new version of the track ‘Stars’ that
originally featured on Sam’s 2010 EP ‘Season’s Change’.
If you are not familiar with the live circuit in Leeds
and the Yorkshire region, then you may not have heard of Sam Airey (I hope this
is a fruitful introduction). Sam Airey originates from the Isle of Anglesey in
Wales, but has long now lived in Leeds. His music is a blend of the folk,
country and alternative music, with sounds and his own experiences influencing
the delicate outcome. Sam’s progressive rise in the industry runs parallel to
the slow but effective evolution of his music (I urge you to check out his
whole back catalogue, it sits proudly amongst my collection). The appraisal
for of his previous singles has lead him to record a Maida Vale session for Huw
Stephens (Radio 1), as well as being picked as Lauren Laverne’s MP2 of the day
and BBC Radio Wales’ ‘Song of the Year’ 2012 (both accolades awarded to ‘The Blackout’).
Ticking off many festivals over his existence, Sam and
his band have appeared at Latitude Festival, SWN, Kendal Calling amongst many
others and last year made a cheeky appearance on national television by guesting
on Channel 4’s Freshly Squeezed.
The Leeds man will be releasing his
finest single yet on the 23rd June, and will play two release shows
in Leeds and London:
20th June – Brudenell Social
Club, Leeds w/ The Lake Poets, Cottonwoolf and Tea Leaf
23rd June – Old Blue Last,
London w/ Cottonwoolf (*free show*)
I imagine big things for Sam Airey, and
hopefully he will further his status as a local legend to a national treasure.
