Festival review... DAS FEST (+Deutsch)

'Das Fest' 2015

Every year on the last weekend of July the festival 'Das Fest' takes place in the city of Karlsruhe in the southwest of Germany. For three days a, normally quiet, park in the city centre becomes the stage for artists and bands such as: Clueso, Moop Mama, The Subways, The Kooks and Fritz Kalkbrenner.

To be fair 'Das Fest' is a small festival in comparison to others taking place at the moment, but it has a special character. The stage build-up is rather different at 'Das Fest'. The stage is built directly in front of a little hill, which is called 'Mount Klotz' and works as a stand for all visitors. At first this makes for a weird sight but that changes once the area is full up with people. After that it's just beautiful.

Friday

My festival experience started on Friday with the German singer Clueso. I attended his set without big expectations, but was positively surprised by the 35 year old guy in playing a great show by doing his own mix from electro, pop, reggea and rap.

The whole crowd started to clap, dance and sing to his music just moments into his set.

But the show and the atmosphere of Clueso was nothing in comparison to what came after that.

The band Moop Mama outplayed everything I had seen before. It was such a pity that they came on stage already announcing that they would only be able to play some minutes due to a big storm coming. After 15 minutes the festival management realised that it was to dangerous to continue the show and the whole area got evacuated.

Despite their short time on the stage, their 'Urban Brass' (their own genre ) was the highlight of the festival for me and I'm already looking forward to seeing them again next year here in Karlsruhe, as they have already been invited to continue with their show.

Saturday

Saturday afternoon was also disturbed by a storm. The first acts were canceled because of wind speeds of up to 85 km/h.

Fortunately The Subways were allowed to play as planned at 7 pm.

The British indie-rock band who released a new album at the beginning of the year started as the second act of the day. Although they only knew German sentences like: 'I would like to have a beer', they succeeded at communicating with the audience and provided a great atmosphere with a mixture of their popular songs such as 'Rock & Roll Queen' and their new (and in Germany) not that popular songs.

The concert I was really looking forward to was that of The Kooks. I had hoped for a show full of interaction between the band and their audience. But the band only played their songs in "studio-mode" not acknowledging that they were in front of a crowd of people. In addition, the whole concert was disturbed by a screaming mass of teenie-girls who made sure that the music itself was unenjoyable.

Of course that's not The Kooks' fault but apart from that, their show was far worse than their music.

Sunday

My first act on Sunday was the German band AnnenMayKantereit. The pop-rock band from Cologne consists of the three men Christopher Annen, Henning May and Severin Kantereit and they seriously proved  that the current hype around them is absolutely justified.

At 9 pm the last act of this year's festival came onstage. Despite the annoying rain DJ Fritz Kalkbrenner celebrated the end of the festival with his composition of technobeats and melodic parts.

In my opinion Das Fest is a very special festival with a unique atmosphere. Besides that, you can enjoy this spectacle for 5€ a day which is really not a lot - especially considering the bands on show.

DEUTSCH

Die Band Moop Mama toppte alles, was ich davor an Shows gesehen habe.
