Politics and hip-hop have gone hand in hand since the days of Afrika Bambaataa and his contemporaries. Caan (ex member of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool) continues this tradition in ‘Changes', whilst also fusing hip-hop with a melodic singing voice that allows him to utilise his genre.
The lyrics are succinct and cutting, whilst also allowing for the sung hook to lift the track beyond the usual hip-hop structure. Many artists are looking to shy away from the controversy of politically-minded music, so it’s a refreshing change to see that the art-form still has its proponents. The video is also second-to-none, a moody black and white affair that compliments the track nicely.
