[LISTEN] Mark Stoermer - Filthy Apes And Lions

Mark Stoermer’s new single Filthy Apes and Lions, the title track from his forthcoming album released next month, is a surreal and apocalyptic vision of animals in the jungle planning to take over humanity with an almost whimsical feel to its musicality that makes the listening experience all the more disorienting. Its Claymation-style music video, directed by acclaimed animator Lee Hardcastle, presents a disturbing visual accompaniment to the song’s message and is not one for the faint-hearted. The video depicts a story of a manic scientist working in a zoo who carries out a violent rampage and turns the caged animals against the humans. On the background of the single, Stroemer comments " I started writing the lyrics for ‘Filthy Apes and Lions’ with only the title in mind. I took it from a line of one of my other songs. Abbey Frances shares their latest offering, "Ants"

Australian singer-songwriter Abbey Frances has evolved from being a solo-project to a full on band project, and recently the outfit has shared their latest offering, "Ants", which follows on from their first two singles, "That Star" and "These Hearts". Delve in and enjoy this upbeat slice of Indie-Rock. The Sydney-based band has only been releasing music since the start of this year, but when you listen to "Ants" you'd be forgiven if you thought they have sold-out shows all over Australia. The sound of the new single reminds me of a blend of Of Monsters and Men but with more of an Indie-Rock drive. The whole vibe to the song screams summer festivals and jumping up and down in joy. The song is one of those euphoric slices of Indie-Rock that'll have you wanting more, and quick. Thankfully there are two more singles - as mentioned earlier - on their Spotify, so delve in and enjoy!

Callow Cal releases vibrant new tune, "Out of Sight, Out of Mind"

Glaswegian singer-songwriter Callow Cal is back with his new release, "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" , which comes nearly two years since his last effort, "Locate". "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" is so vibrant and infectious. It's rather obvious from the get-go that this song is vibrant and infectiously upbeat. The sudden burst of jingles and bouncy drums flows through you like the flow of cola on a hot summer day, and much like a cola this track is also as sugary as one. His smooth vocals that rolls over the track is fantastic, and gives me late 90s britpop tones mixed in with radio-friendly guitar-pop. Having released his first track back in 2019, Cal has been slowly refining his sound, and it sounds like "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" is his calling card, watch it go viral!

about-faces return with new single, "The River"

One of the most exciting bands to come out of Leeds this year - about-faces - have now returned with their new single, "The River", and it's blown us out of the water with how powerful and energetic it is. Simply a powerful and energetic blend of indie-rock, you need this band in your life. It's in a similar genre as the debut, but to be honest you should never alter your sound after the first single, as it sets some sort of expectation. So, when we heard the follow-up to "Under the Sun" we we're expecting something majestic, and we were not disappointed. The new song is a blend of the anthemic sounds of Arcade Fire mixed with an urgent back-line that Foals is known for. With love now shone upon them from BBC Leeds and Radio X the trajectory of this band going to be astronomical at this rate.

The Lovepools share their dark new synth-pop tune, "Something = Nothing"

Los Angeles-based The Lovepools have just recently shared their dark new synth-pop tune, "Something = Nothing", the new offering comes after a two year break following their "Island of My Own" single - and since has seen them smash past the 200k play mark on Spotify. A great example of synth-lead dark-pop. The duo are rather consistent with their work, and this new slice of music has us reaching back in time to the likes of MGMT at their finest, even with nods towards the likes of Gorillaz mixed in. The beat that's within the track is very haunting, offering the listener a peak into their minds, and combined with the dark and moody vocals the track has a slight 'late October night' feel to it. It's bold and punchy in places with glistening electronic whirls, but with a great dark cloud casting a shadow over it, we absolutely love this!
