Huddersfield-based LONG ISLAND has recently dropped their eagerly awaited new EP, "the freedom of being young". Sitting in at seven tracks long this may be considered a mini-album but who are we to complain about more tunes to get stuck into!
Kicking things off with the dreamy and melodic "it's our time" it feels fresh, almost like the early summer has rolled back around, and with a slightly pop-punk edge to the track it certainly perked by interest on the first listen.
Next up is the snappy "just another day", and right from the start it gave me The Drums and Fickle Friends vibes, with a combination of spiky guitar bursts and surf-driven percussion that feels like you can easily get a groove on.
The best new cut (that was not otherwise already released) from the release in my humble opinion is "daydream", the pacing, the sounds of the guitars and the whole shimmering undertone of the track had me playing this to the edge of insanity, and I'm still hooked to it!
"homewrecker" we've already covered to head here to check that out, tl;dr, we loved it!
The duo of "want it more" and "get up to go" follow and the first of the two is an out and out indie-rock anthem that sounds like it'll be on their setlist for years to come, and no doubt be a force when they perform it live! "get up and go" is once more an indie anthem, but with a recognisable bassline that sounds part The Killers and part The Police, an absolute earworm of a hook.
Rounding off the release is "young", and this one goes a long way in getting you interested in their sound - if you were not already. It's a frantic tune that kicks things up to 11 with a driven drumbeat and a soaring riff that seemingly complement each other.
Out of 10: 9/10
