Earlier this month saw The Davenports return with their new album, "You Could've Just Said That", which is their first since 2018's "Don't Be Mad At Me". The project is a collective helmed by Scott Klass, and on each track, a different mix of artists collaborates, with members of They Might Be Giants, Fountains of Wayne, and Winterpills all appearing on one track.
The new record is a smooth collection of acoustically charged songs mixed with an undertone of folk, all the while wrapped up with strong vocals adorning it throughout.
For me the top four tracks on the record are all previously unreleased singles as (opposed to the tracks that came out in the lead-up). One that stood out for me was "If You Put Me Next To Patti", teh slow nature of the track really won me over, and with the moody piano tones added to the mix I felt that they worked perfectly with Scott's vocals.
The album title track is also a tune that we warmed up to quickly, with it's upbeat tempo and foot-stomping-friendly percussive section. We also loved the addition of some subtle keyboard tones that added more depth. Talking about depth "When I Tell You That I’m Sorry" is yet another track that we loved on the first listen, and with this featuring more upbeat sounds including strings it worked its way into our hearts (and playlists) on the first bounce, it reminded me a lot of Mumford & Sons in places too.
The final track of the album (and what we are focusing on) is "We Know We Want To", which is a majestic blend of his soft and raw vocals, those aforementioned emotive guitar strums and pure emotion. No wonder this is the closing track, as I felt like I wanted to delve into the previous releases after hearing this.
