Lexytron's new album, "Something New" is an 11-track journey that solidifies the Auckland-based artist as one of the rising acts in the indie-pop scene.
... Lexytron's "Something New" is a genre-blending indie-pop gem - dreamy, nostalgic, and infectiously catchy. With standout tracks like "Kiss Me Quick" and "Laughing from Above" it showcases her versatility, vocal strength, and undeniable rising-star potential.
The album is filled with a sound that pulls from dream pop, retro guitar rock, power pop, and even funk in places too. The record is as eclectic as it is cohesive, tying its wide influences together with some unmistakable vocal prowess.
"Kiss Me Quick" stands as a highlight, with my previous review even stating - If you strip back the track to the core trio of instruments – bass, guitar and drums – it could easily feel like you're in the early 2000s. I felt like this was a blend of Blondie, The Cranberries and The Cure. The sounds on "Kiss Me Quick" are ready to take you on a nostalgic trip, and not just one trip as this cut is incredibly infectious!
Another gem is "Disco Jenny", yet another we previously wrote about. It's a very spritely track with some nods of acoustic and folk added in too for good measure.
From the new batch of songs, "Your Love" stood out as a possible single, with it having delightful jangly guitar mixed with radio-friendly vocals that can have you singing along in the car. It gave me big The Big Moon vibes too, especially with the backing tones.
The closing track was an epic tune, and honestly, a perfect finale to the whole album experience, it felt like one of those tracks that won't be a single but the die-hard fans would always request to be performed live. It's got big drum patterns mixed in with a nostalgic sheen, all the while draped with clean vocal hooks.
"Something New" proves Lexytron can easily (and seamlessly) shapeshift between genres while still sounding entirely her own. This is a brilliant album that needs to be heard!
