When German band "In Schwarz" (In Black) suddenly appeared out of nowhere this May, the German music scene was left speculating who this band were and where they had come from. Due to the masked band's rapping about love-fuelled revolt against the system, depictions in their music video and the fact the band had signed for leftist label Audiolith, most viewers of the music video to "Hand in Hand" (their debut and only song) were sure: just another punk band, soon to be banished to the depth's of Germany's black list by the 'Verfassungsschutz' (a wing of the Home Office).
Here comes the downside for non-German speaking listeners: a major part of KRAFTKLUB's success is down to their impressive lyrics. That's where Google Translator comes in for you.
Apart from the odd slip up this album is as good as Indie-Rap can get. Kraftklub have once again proven that they are a band like no other.

Then, one Wednesday evening the bubble of mystery surrounding the band was burst in a dramatic twist on "Circus Halligalli", a German TV show. Special guests that night were "In Schwarz", who, while performing "Hand In Hand" pulled off masks to reveal their real identity. The group which had left music media and fans with no idea who they were, were in fact: KRAFTKLUB. The band, which had caused havoc with its debut album in 2012 were back. That night they also announced that their follow-up album "In Schwarz" would be released in September.
3 months on and that album is finally here. Prior to the release of the album I had spent a lot of time wondering what the new album would sound like. A change of style? New influences? The answer to my questions was fairly simple: the band sound just as they did on their debut album. For some that may be a disappointment - for me however that is fantastic. German lad rock will be around for some time to come.
Their song "Unsere Fans" (Our Fans) is a self-ironic, humorous take on the band's sudden rise to fame. Raps about the way their fans have changed give way to a chorus, which will be no doubt be sung along by exactly those fans while they are slinging themselves into mosh pits on their next tour.
The second song on the album "Alles Wegen Dir" tells the story of not being able to concentrate or lead a normal life due to a girl stepping into ones life.
The next song "Wie Ich" has a late-night-festival-feel to it, due to the "woah" shouts in the background. The lyrics are pretty melancholic, with the singers Felix and Karl claiming that they would rather be someone else than the people they are. "I'd rather be less than me, and more like you". It's my favourite song on the album. Melodic, melancholic and lyrically simply genius.
"Zwei Dosen Sprite" is a song everyone can relate to: you're at a party and it turns out to be rubbish. There's free drinks at the party, sing Kraftklub, but even they aren't really fun, as they need to be drunk anyway to even cope with the people at the party. The song then turns into a love song about their place, which isn't really a home, but nonetheless better than being at the party.
"Schüsse in die Luft" is the song where Kraftklub turn political. At first they cover the topic of people watching daytime TV (solely ironically, of course) instead of going outside and changing things. And if you haven't achieved anything, you could always be proud of your country, the band ironically rap, as they refer to the growing neo-nazi scene in the east of Germany.
Kraftklub celebrate being single in their song "Für immer". "I'm alone forever", they sing in the chorus, while using the verses to explain why being single is amazing. Musically it's the typical Kraftklub song. Energetic guitars with Felix's rapping and Karl's singing complementing each other perfectly.
Ever heard a song dedicated to a bicycle? No, well then listen to "Mein Rad"! The band's bicycle has been stolen and is now being used by someone else. The lyrics are very humorous, as they could well be mistaken for lyrics about a former girlfriend and not a bike.
"Blau" is the German word for 'blue'. And in German blue means drunk. So in their song "Drunk" the band cover the topic of thinking about and calling an ex-girlfriend when drunk.
I mentioned their song "Hand in Hand" earlier. Singer Felix finds himself in the middle of a violent demonstration, because he followed a girl there. He hasn't got a clue what he's demonstrating against, but is sure to have the same opinion as the girl anyway. The track is one of the more aggressive songs on the album, not only lyrically. The energy of the song, perfectly captures that adrenaline-filled felling of standing in a tear-gas filled square with stones flying overhead.
After being very loud on their last song, the band claim that their town is too loud for them. However they don't claim this as Kraftklub, but rather as a fictional person resembling the older, narrow-minded, uptight population of their city. It's also the track where they get really political, criticising the unjust distribution of wealth in Germany, rising rents and the fact that nobody voices their opinion anymore. Musically "Meine Stadt ist zu laut", is the albums weakest track in my eyes, as the song just doesn't sport that Kraftklub song texture. It is however brave to try something new, which the band have certainly done on that track, i.e. using an acoustic guitar
German rap star Casper features on the following song "Schöner Tag" (Nice Day). It's the kind of day that one should be happy on, but every naive, good thought has some negative part to it. The band deal with the topic of depression and suicide in this song naming different ways of killing oneself throughout "Schöner Tag". The track turns really aggressive and unmelodious as Casper steps in to deliver his contribution to his mates' album.
"Deine Gang" (Your Gang) is a comparison between to gangs. That of Kraftklub and another one. While the Kraftklub ones are nerdy and unpopular they are the ones actually enjoying themselves.

Als diesen Juni die maskierte Band "In Schwarz" plötzlich aus dem Nichts auftauchte, konnte die deutsche Musikszene nur spekulieren, wer diese Band war und woher sie kamen. Aufgrund ihres Raps über, durch Liebe angetriebene, Revolte gegen das System, dem Zeigen von Demonstrationen in ihrem Musikvideo und einem Plattenvertrag bei Audiolith, waren sich die meisten Viewer von ihrem Video zu "Hand In Hand" sicher: eine neue Punk Band, die schon bald auf der "Schwarzen Liste"(Index) des Verfassungsschutzes landen würde.
Doch eines Mittwoch Abends wurde das Mysterium um die Band mit einem dramatischen Auftritt bei "Circus Halligalli" gelüftet. Während eines Auftritts ihres Songs "Hand In Hand" zogen "In Schwarz" ihre Masken aus und offenbarten der Welt ihre wahre Identität. Die Band, die die Medien und Musikfans ahnungslos gelassen hatte waren: KRAFTKLUB. Die Jungs, die mit ihrem Debüt Album 2012 die Musikwelt ordentlich wachgerüttelt hatte, war zurück. Das Release-Datum ihres neuen Album "In Schwarz" wurde ebenfalls während dieser Show bekanntgegeben.
3 Monate später und endlich können wir das Album in unseren Händen halten. Während dieser Zeit habe ich mich oft gefragt, wie das neue Album werden würde. Würden Kraftklub ihren Stil verändern? Würde man neue Einflüsse heraushören, die das Album geprägt hatten? Die Antwort auf meine Fragen war allerdings genauso leicht, wie es ist die Chorusse der Band bei ihren Konzerten mitzugröhlen: das neue Album weist musikalisch keine riesigen Veränderungen zum Vorgänger auf - und obwohl das für viele vielleicht enttäuschend sein mag ist das Musik in meinen Ohren. Deutscher "Indie-Rap" um genau zu sein.
Der Song "Unsere Fans" fasst, in Selbstironie gebündelt, den steilen Aufstieg der Band zusammen. Jegliche Vorwürfe, die Fans der Band hätten machen können, räumen Kraftklub mit dem Song geschickt aus dem Weg. Spätestens beim Chorus werden besagte Fans bei einer der kommenden Live Shows mitsingen, während sie sich im Moshpit umschubsen.
Das zweite Lied auf dem Album "Alles Wegen Dir" erzählt von dem Gefühl sich nicht konzentrieren oder ein normales Leben führen zu können, weil ein Mädchen plötzlich aufgetaucht ist und einen komplett aus der Bahn wirft.
Der nächste Song "Wie Ich" hat aufgrund den Rufen von Karl im Hintergrund irgendwie dieses Spätabend-Festival-Gefühl. Felix und Karl beichten uns, dass sie lieber anders wären als sie sind - ziemlich melancholische Lyrics. "Ich wär gern weniger wie ich, ein bisschen mehr so wie du". Der Track ist mit Abstand mein Favorit auf dem Album. Melodisch, melancholisch und geniale Lyrics.
"Zwei Dosen Sprite" ist dieser Typ von Song mit dem sich jeder identifizieren kann: du bist auf einer Party und merkst, dass sie richtig räudig ist. Selbst die kostenlosen Drinks auf der Party erweisen sich nichts als Trost, da man sowieso betrunken sein muss, um die Leute dort aushalten zu können. Aus dem Song wird dann ein Liebesgeständnis an eine Wohnung, die zwar kein Zuhause, aber dennoch besser als die Party ist.
"Schüsse in die Luft" ist der Song auf dem Kraftklub politisch werden. Sie fangen an, indem sie darüber Rappen, dass es Idioten gibt, die den ganzen Tag Daytime TV schauen, statt rauszugehen und etwas zu ändern. "Und selbst wenn alles scheiße ist, du pleite bist und sonst nichts kannst, dann sei doch einfach stolz auf dein Land", verkünden die Band ironisch und bekunden ihren Unmut über die wachsende Rechte Szene in ihrer Stadt Chemnitz. Auch die Anti-Asyl Stimmung die sich schleichend in Deutschland breitmacht erwähnen sie.
"Für immer" ist eine Feier des Single-Seins. "Ich bin für immer allein", singt Karl im Chorus, bevor Felix aufzählt warum das fantastisch ist. Musikalisch gesehen ist es der typische Kraftklub Song: Energie gefüllt, die typischen Riffs und das perfekte Zusammenspiel zwischen Karls Singen und Felix Rappen.
Falls ihr, wie ich, noch nie einen Song über eine Fahrrad gehört habt ist "Mein Rad" der Song für euch. Ein Fahrrad wurde geklaut und wird jetzt von jemand anderem genutzt. Kommt eigentlich fast so oft vor wie Trennungen und Neuanfänge mit neuen Partnern. Wartet mal, vielleicht geht der Song ja um mehr als nur ein altes Fahrrad?
"Blau" handelt von einer ganz typischen Szene. Die "Nein, ich liebe sie sicher nicht mehr!"-Dialoge mit Freunden, von denen man vielleicht sogar überzeugt ist - bis man betrunken ist und alle Gefühle wieder da sind. Naja, kommt vor.
"Hand in Hand" erzählt wie sich Felix mitten in einer gewalttätigen Demonstration befindet, nur weil er einem Mädchen gefolgt ist. Er hat keine Ahnung wogegen er eigentlich demonstriert, ist sich aber sicher sowieso die Meinung des Mädchens zu teilen. Es ist einer der aggressiveren Tracks auf dem Album - nicht nur lyrisch. Die Energie des Songs spiegelt perfekt das Adrenalin-gefüllte Gefühl auf einem Tränengas getränkten Platz zu stehen, während Steine durch die Luft fliegen.
Nachdem sie bei "Hand in Hand" ganz schön laut waren, beschweren sie sich bei "Meine Stadt ist zu laut" darüber, dass -Überraschung- ihre Stadt zu laut ist. Das tun sie aber nicht als Kraftklub, sondern als spießiger, intoleranter Bewohner ihrer Stadt. Es ist auch der Track auf dem sie richtig politisch werden und steigende Mieten, ungerechte Verteilung von Kapital und fehlende Toleranz kritisieren. Obwohl die Band bei dem Song etwas neues gewagt hat, finde ich ihn eher schwach, da er keine typischen Kraftklub Texturen aufweist.
Weiter ging es bei "In Schwarz" mit der Zusammenarbeit mit einem Kumpel. Seit einiger Zeit steht ja fest, dass Kraftklub und Casper ziemlich gute Freunde sind. Bei "Ganz schön okay" featurten Kraftklub auf Caspers Album und nun erwidert Casper diesen Gefallen. "Schöner Tag" lautet der Track in dem die Band über einen eigentlich wunderbaren Tag Rappen. Doch zwischen allen guten Gedanken stecken irgendwo, tief versteck, unschöne Wahrheiten. Kraftklub behandeln in dem Song die ernsten Themen Depression und Suizid und zählen während "Schöner Tag" verschiedene Arten des Suizides auf. Richtig aggressiv wird der Track dann auch noch, als Casper einsteigt.

Den Abschluss bildet "Deine Gang". Der Vergleich zwischen zwei Gangs. Der nerdig, unbeliebten von Kraftklub und den coolen Kids, die allerdings deutlich weniger Spaß haben als die Unbeliebten.
Mit dem Album haben Kraftklub ihren Ruf lustige, ironische, aber auch melancholische Lyrics schreiben zu können verfestigt und haben das wahrscheinlich beste deutschsprachige Album 2014 herausgebracht. Zu sagen, dass sich Kraftklub in der Indie-Rap Szene etabliert hätte wäre eine dämliches Understatement. Warum? Fällt euch eine andere Band ein, die diesen Musikstil hat? Richtig!
Deswegen gibt's von uns eine solide 9/10.
